Ball Type Bearings

What are ball bearings?

Ball bearings are versatile, self-retaining bearings with solid outer rings, inner rings, and ball and cage assemblies.

These products are simple in design, robust in operation, and easy to maintain.

Due to their relatively low frictional torque, deep-groove ball bearings are suitable for high speeds. The angular adjustment facility of single-row ball bearings is limited, so bearing positions must be well aligned.

Ball bearings are manufactured with several various configurations that provide different features suitable for a wide range of applications, for example, angular contact or double row.

FAG (Schaeffler) and NSK both manufacture a comprehensive range of deep groove ball bearings that meet, if not exceed, ISO specifications. FAG (Schaeffler) & NSK offer a range of specific products with various features and benefits to offer a solution across most applications.

Types of Ball Bearings We Supply

Ball type bearings can be broadly categorised into the following groups:

Single-row deep groove ball bearings

These are rigid and non-separable radial bearings. The balls run in deep grooves in both the inner and outer rings. This enables a good load capacity in both radial and axial directions.

Single-row angular contact ball bearings

These are also rigid and non-separable radial bearings. However, these are produced with several different contact angles which means they only accept thrust loads in one direction.

They must therefore be used in pairs where a bearing has to be adjusted against another to guide the shaft in the opposite direction.

These bearings are suitable for high-speed applications, accommodating both radial and thrust forces which can include combined loads and tilting movements.

Self-aligning ball bearings

These are non-separable double-row radial bearings. Both rows of balls rotate in parallel within a spherical outer ring. This feature allows for excellent misalignment which can be caused by machining and mounting errors.

These series are suitable for low to medium loads, including relatively low thrust force.

Thrust ball bearings

Thrust bearings are separable axial bearings that assist in simple mounting or dismounting. The bearing washers, cage and ball assemblies mean each may be individually mounted in location.

Thrust ball bearings accommodate a rather high axial load, but cannot be used while radial forces are present. They do not compensate for any misalignment.

It is recommended that you consult your local Statewide Bearings branch and engineering team to ensure you get the most appropriate bearing for your application.

Ball bearings are used across a variety of different industries and applications. Here are some common examples:

  • Industrial Machinery: They are used in a wide range of industrial machinery, including conveyor systems, pumps, motors, gearboxes, and manufacturing equipment. Ball bearings help facilitate rotational motion, support heavy loads, and reduce energy consumption.
  • Aerospace and Aviation: Ball bearings play a crucial role in aircraft engines, landing gear systems, control surfaces, and other critical aerospace applications. They provide high precision, withstand extreme temperatures, and maintain reliability in demanding conditions.
  • Mining: Ball bearings are used in mining equipment such as conveyors, crushers, and mills to support rotating shafts, reducing friction and ensuring smooth operation.

Ball bearings are mechanical components used to reduce friction between moving parts in various machines and mechanisms. They consist of a series of small metal balls housed within a ring or casing. The balls are typically made of steel and are designed to roll smoothly between the inner and outer surfaces of the bearing.

When a load is applied to the bearing, such as the weight of a rotating shaft or an external force, the balls distribute the load evenly across their contact points with the raceways. As a result, the balls roll rather than slide, which significantly reduces friction and wear.
